A class that asks you to start a real business.
We met in a venture creation course at the National University of Singapore. It doesn’t end in an exam. Each team gets one semester to start an actual business: find a problem real people have, talk to them, build something, and find out whether anyone would pay for it.
Most of that happens outside the classroom. So we spent our weeks at cafe and bakery counters across Singapore, asking owners what makes their job harder than it should be.
- AugustWe walked into cafes with a different idea, about menu trends. Owners told us, kindly, that it wasn’t their problem. Knowing what everyone else charges was.
- SeptemberWe started reading cafe menus, price by price, from each shop’s own menu.
- OctoberNearly 6,000 prices from 96 cafes and bakeries, a map owners can check their shop against, and a free email every Monday. We became Counter, and the email became The Weekly Bake.
Every change on this site started as something an owner told us at the counter. That’s still how we decide what to build next.
